Burnley eye summer move for Wigan Athletic loanee

Burnley are showing an interest in Wigan Athletic loanee Reece James.

The 19-year-old defender has spent this season on loan with the Latics from Chelsea and Burnley want a similar deal for the next campaign, according to The Sun.

Premier League duo Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace have been linked with permanent moves for James over recent weeks. However, it is believed Burnley want a loan which could suit Chelsea better.

The Clarets will have to focus on staying up in the top flight first though as their 2-1 home defeat to Leicester City yesterday has plunged them deep into relegation trouble.

Reece James has played 35 games in all competitions for the Latics and has impressed for Paul Cook’s side.

He has never made a senior appearance for Chelsea but looks a promising talent. The Blues have a big decision to make about him in the summer as to whether to loan him out again or cash in.

James joined the London side when he was six and has risen up through their academy. He has won the FA Youth Cup twice and won Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Season in the last campaign. He has also represented England at U18, U19 and U20 level so far in his career.

His loan at Wigan this season has been a great learning curve for him and has given him a taste of regular football at a decent level. The likes of Burnley, Palace and Brighton will be closely monitoring his situation over the coming months.
