Charlton Athletic’s sought after star set to depart – medical scheduled with new club

The Daily Mail has today reported (Saturday 22nd) that Charlton Athletic midfielder Joe Aribo is poised to make a move to Scottish Premiership outfit Rangers, with a medical scheduled to take place this weekend.

The ongoing transfer speculation surrounding Charlton Athletic star man Joe Aribo has been rumbling on for some time now. However, it looks set to come to an end soon.

Scottish Premiership side Rangers have agreed a deal with the Addicks to bring Aribo to Ibrox for next season. The 22-year-old midfielder is set to travel to Scotland for a medical this weekend after the two clubs came to an agreeance over a compensation fee.

Rangers will pay Charlton Athletic a compensation fee of £300,000 to bring Aribo to Scotland this summer, fending off masses of transfer interest in doing so. Addicks boss Lee Bowyer was hopeful of tieing down the midfielder to a new deal after he had his own future at the club sorted. But, despite Bowyer putting pen to paper on a new contract, Aribo has not followed suit.

The Daily Mail writes that Aribo was subject to interest from ten Championship clubs, along with Premier League sides Aston Villa, Southampton, Bournemouth and Brighton. Rangers’ arch-rivals Celtic were also linked with a move for the midfielder, as were German side Stuttgart, Italian Serie A outfit Torino and French club Rennes.

But, it has now emerged that he is set to link up with Steven Gerrard at Rangers, with a four-year deal set to be confirmed sometime next week. Aribo will be sorely missed by Charlton fans, who took a strong liking to the 22-year-old upon his emergence into the club’s first-team. Aribo has played 97 times for the club along the way, scoring 16 goals and laying on 15 assists.
