Olympiacos 2-0 Aston Villa (6-2) LIVE REACTION: Premier League humilated with final team crashing out of Europe as El Kaabi haunts Emery again

Aston Villa suffered Europa Conference League semi-final heartbreak after crashing out with a 2-0 defeat to Olympiacos.

The Premier League side already had a mountain to climb in Greece following a 4-2 defeat at Villa Park in the first leg.

Unai Emery’s side followed that loss up with another against Brighton at the weekend and failed to bounce back in Europe.

Villa started the brighter of the two sides but were sucker-punched by Ayoub El Kaabi adding his fifth of the tie ten minutes in.

Villa tried as they might to engineer a comeback but couldn't break down Olympiacos' stubborn defence.

And any faint hope of a dramatic finish was extinguished by El Kaabi 12 minutes from time as the hosts set up a Europa Conference League final date with Fiorentina.

  • And that's it from us!

Whilst semi-final defeat will come as a cruel blow to Villa, reaching such a stage shows the progress they're making under Emery.

Next season currently looks set to see them play in the Champions League instead as they sit fourth in the Premier League table with two games left to play.

But this season's European journey has now come to an end and winners Olympiakos will face Fiorentina in the final at the AEK Arena in Athens on May 29.

  • 'The tie was unfortunately lost in the first leg'

More from McGinn if injuries have caught up with Aston Villa: "Possibly. Possibly. The manager drills into us that is is a no excuse environment.

"Listen you want everyone available, you want your best players there. When you are in the trenches, someone you can turn to in order to change the game or do something different.

"Tonight I think the game plan was perfect in the first half. We've got to be really proud of how we played. The goal was extremely disappointing. The tie was unfortunately lost in the first leg - we didn't control the game or manage it well enough, the performance was poor.

"For us going into more European competition next season we need to learn how to manage moments a lot better.

"Of course we wanted to do better this year and get to a European final but we will do everything we can to get ourselves back into this position and get to a final."

  • John McGinn reacts

Aston Villa captain McGinn speaking to TNT Sports: "Believe it or not we actually started the game very well. The first half was a really good performance by us, but over the two legs very, very disappointing obviously.

"We went into this competition of favourites and we handle that throughout the competition. I think it has been a big learning curve for us. It's not been a smooth journey, we got to the semi-final and were down to the bare bones a wee bit.

"However those of us that were out there across the two legs lost to the better team and the scoreline shows that."

  • 'It's such a shame'

Former Villa defender Alan Hutton told TNT Sports: "The first leg wasn't good enough from Villa, they knew being at home for the first leg they had to put on a performance and they didn't do that.

"It's such a shame, I'm so disappointed for them, but it's not all doom and gloom - there's some big things ahead for them."

  • Back to the big-time?

Villa can turn despair to delight by qualifying for the Champions League on Saturday if Tottenham lose to Burnley.

Even a Spurs victory would not prevent Villa should they then defeat Liverpool at Villa Park on Monday night.

Villa have not played in UEFA's top continental competition since 1982-83 and have never featured in the Champions League since it was rebranded in 1992.

  • Leverkusen make history with unbeaten run

Meanwhile, elsewhere tonight, Bayer Leverkusen extended their remarkable unbeaten run to 49 games with a stunning late equaliser against Roma.

Recording a 2-2 draw on the night, Xabi Alonso's side progressed into the Europa League final with a 4-2 aggregate score to keep their treble dream alive.

  • 'Why can't Olympiakos go on and win it?'

Peter Crouch told TNT Sports: "Olympiakos have so much creativity, you can see how well coached they are.

"They've got so many plusses, why can't they go on and win it?

"There's so many games in this competition, so any team that gets into the final and still does well domestically - its a credit to any side."

  • Olympiakos 2-0 Aston Villa (Agg: 6-2) Reaction

Aston Villa players cut downcast figures as they crashed out of the Europa Conference League against Olympiakos.

Unai Emery’s side travelled to Greece having to overturn their 4-2 aggregate deficit from the first leg but two goals from Ayoub El Kaabi proved too much for them.

The Moroccan, who scored a hat-trick at Villa Park, quickly dashed Villa’s hopes of a comeback when he netted unmarked after just ten minutes.

Villa dominated possession for much of the match in search of a reply to potentially inspire what would’ve been a monumental turnaround.

But the killer blow was dealt in the 80th minute when El Kaabi scored another close-range finish, with the goal being awarded following a VAR check for offside.
